Germiston is in the centre of the goldfields for which Johannesburg was established. It was founded in 1886 and became a town in 1903 before being labelled a city in 1950. Germiston was named by John Jack, an early prospector in the area, who named it after the neighbourhood in Glasgow, Scotland, where he grew up.
