In 2002, Ellisras was renamed Lephalale, in honour of the main river that crosses the municipal area. Over and above being renowned for having one of the largest open grove coalmines in the world, Lephalale is renowned for the excellent fishing opportunities available in the nearby Mokolo Dam.
