Pretoria at a glance
With its green leafy look, rich history and wide streets that burst forth in an explosion of purple every year in jacaranda season, Pretoria is an iconic South African city. It is also our nation's capital, affectionately known as Jacaranda City.
Getting to know Pretoria
The city of Pretoria was founded by Marthinus Pretorius in 1855 and it was named in honour of his father, Andries Pretorius. In the late 1800s, it became known as "The City of Roses" because its climate was conducive to the growth of rambler roses. Later, an enthusiastic gardener from the area imported the city's now-iconic Jacaranda trees from Rio de Janeiro and the rest was history. Pretoria was declared a city in October 1931 and is now part of the larger City of Tshwane.
