Witbank at a glance

Witbank - now officially known as eMalahleni - is the beating heart of a coal-mining precinct and home to the well-known Witbank Dam. It is also considered the cultural heartland of the Mpumalanga province. Thanks to its impressive array of attractions and experiences, eMalahleni is a popular choice for those looking for a home in Mpumalanga that is also relatively close to Gauteng.

Getting to know Witbank

Witbank has a spot in the annals of history because during the South African war (1899 to 1902), the world-renowned soldier-journalist Winston Churchill hid in a colliery near Witbank after escaping from Pretoria. The area is built to accommodate heavy industry, and Witbank Dam's power plant supplies electricity to a wide area. In 2006, Witbank's name was officially changed to eMalahleni. Another interesting fact about Witbank is that the well-loved late South African musician, Hugh Masekela, was born here in 1939.

One of the things that many people love about Witbank is the year-round warm weather. Summer days will often see the mercury rising into the low or mid-30s, and even in the coldest month of the year, which is July, temperatures are likely to peak in the high teens or low 20s. After the heat of the day, temperatures drop at night all year round, allowing for a pleasant break from the heat.
