All the reasons to love Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve

Category Lifestyle

If you're interested in spending an afternoon birdwatching, getting some great new content for your social media, going for a hike or just enjoying some time in the great outdoors, Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is a fantastic place to go. For residents of Kibler Park and surrounding areas in Joburg's South, it's an ideal place to go if you want to relax and get some Vitamin D in the form of sunshine. The CSi Property Group takes a closer look at everything Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve offers Joburg South residents.

Hikes to suit everybody

One of the many things we love about Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is that there's a hike for everyone. Alltrails provides a detailed lowdown of all the reserve's hiking trails and if you're a beginner or inexperienced hiker, you can take on the Klipriviersberg Bloubos Trail. It's an out-and-back 5.5km hike that takes about an hour and a half to complete. There isn't too much cover from the sun on this route, so early mornings and late afternoons are the most comfortable times to take on this walk.

If you're keen on a more moderate hike with plenty of variation and some uphills to keep it challenging, you could choose the Dassie, Gifbol, Kiepersol Ruins Loop. One of the highlights of this route is the opportunity to see game like zebra, red hartebeest and black wildebeest. The hike is 12.2km long and forms a loop, so you end up right back where you started. This is not the right route for a novice hiker, as there are challenging stretches of rocky terrain to navigate.

Intrepid hikers looking for a tougher challenge can take on the Klipriviersberg Loop, which is a 17.4km route that takes more than five hours to complete. The inclines on this hike are intense and you'll need to be fit to tackle this challenge.

An important fact to note is that the trails are interlinked and cross over each other at certain points. Be careful to follow the signage (and preferably grab a map at the entrance) to make sure you don't get lost.

A birdwatcher's paradise

Birdwatchers should always grab their binoculars when heading to Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve because every visit provides a chance to encounter an abundance of species. Look out for the Jameson's Firefinch, Red-collared Widowbird, Bronze Mannikin, Black-throated Aplis and Cape Robin, to name just a few. Although the area does not make a good permanent home for water birds, they come for a visit in their abundance, and an observant birdwatcher could spot the likes of Green-backed Heron, White Stork and Yellow-billed Duck.

If you're more interested in seeing animals than birds, your best bet is to stick to the flat terrain rather than heading up the mountain. If you're lucky, you'll be able to spot blesbok, duiker and zebra, as well as some larger antelope species.
