Getting your home ready for 2021 with the right decor trends
Category Property Advice
The fact that you're a tenant and not a homeowner doesn't mean that you don't get to be creative with your space. While painting the walls will require your landlord's permission, your choice of furniture, rugs, scatter cushions and decorations do not. There are plenty of ways to reflect your tastes and to introduce the new décor trends that 2021 is about to bring our way.
The hottest décor trends of 2021
Looking at stylebooks and trend blogs both locally and internationally, there are a few trends that will clearly be big in 2021. Natural materials and the great outdoors are topping the list, with natural designs and motifs becoming focal points in the home. Great ways to welcome the outside in include allowing in as much natural light as possible - think trendy curtain tie-backs that will keep those curtains out of the way when they are not needed. Indoor plants and flowers are another way for tenants to add a touch of nature to their homes, and this theme can be taken further with wicker furniture and glass-topped tables.
Vintage is another trend continuing into 2021, but the important thing here is not to overdo it. Build your collection of vintage furniture over time and invest only in pieces that mean something to you. With travel being difficult in the time of COVID-19, travel motifs and beach getaway themes are another popular 2021 décor scheme. If you can't get to your dream destination, bring the dream destination to your home.
The right colour can say 1000 words
In keeping with the décor theme of all things nature, Dulux has named their Colour of the Year 2021 as "Brave Ground", a gentle hue that harks back to nature and simplicity. It's warm, earthy and provides a foundation of neutral colour on which to build a spectacular décor scheme. Couple with this with splashes of other earthy colours such as greens and oranges to create a space that's tranquil and homely.
Spaces that multitask
Thanks to everything we've gone through in 2020, home offices are now part of many of our homes, and people are getting creative about where their home office goes. While some might be lucky enough to have a spare bedroom to call their office, many people have had to transform a section of their lounge into a home office - and it's possible to do this in ways that look great. Depending on the configuration of the space that you have available, one great idea is to set up your desk behind your lounge suite to create a separate working space. In some homes, there may be a "forgotten" space like the space under a staircase or a corner nook that can make an ideal home office space.
A new year's resolution that your home will thank you for
Use the start of a new year as a motivation to declutter and get rid of old clothes, toys, papers and trinkets that you no longer need. The rule of thumb is that if you haven't worn it, used it or looked at it in the past year, it's time for it to go. Sort your pile of paraphernalia into two categories: that which can be given away or recycled, and that which must be thrown away.
