Explore Maropeng - the Cradle of Humankind

Lonely Planet aptly describes Maropeng as "an all-in-one information centre, visitor attraction and entertainment complex". The centre showcases the development of humans and our ancestors over millions of years. It starts with the formation of our planet and showcases all the evolutionary processes that led to the world being the way we know it today. Be sure to take proof of identification, because pensioners get a discount.

Visit a botanical garden

One of the best aspects of life in Gauteng is an array of outdoor spaces. The Pretoria National Botanical Garden, Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden and Johannesburg Botanical Gardens at Emmarentia Dam all work together to dispel the myth that Gauteng is a concrete jungle.

Pretoria National Botanical Garden is an urban escape situated in Pretoria's eastern suburbs. With over 200 bird species having been seen here, it's a birdwatcher's paradise. You can also be lucky enough to spot small mammals like the slender mongoose, scrub hare or common duiker.

If the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Roodepoort is closer to home for you, you'll be able to see an abundance of birdlife, including Peregrine Falcons and Helmeted Guineafowl. There is also a breeding pair of Verreaux's Eagles nesting on the cliffs near the waterfall.

Visitors to the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens will be able to explore its array of special gardens, including the Shakespeare Garden, the Rose Garden, the Herb Garden and the Hedge Demonstration Garden.

Explore the past at the Apartheid Museum

The Apartheid Museum is the perfect place to discover everything you need to know about South Africa's struggle for liberation. Its array of permanent exhibits includes Race Classification, Journeys, Segregation and Life Under Apartheid, amongst various others. History is brought to life at the Apartheid Museum through expertly curated exhibits, interactive displays and deeply moving personal accounts.

Pay Montecasino a visit

Aptly described as Joburg's number one entertainment destination, Montecasino is the place to enjoy international theatre productions, soak away your troubles at relaxing spas or even visit a wildlife park. Of course, you can also visit the casino, watch a movie or visit one of the many restaurants at this diverse venue. Montecasino's décor is reminiscent of small Italian towns and the ambience is both relaxed and fun.

Take a drive through Rietvlei Nature Reserve

One of the privileges of living in Africa is the opportunity to see majestic animals like rhino, buffalo and cheetah in their natural environment. If you take a drive through Pretoria's Rietvlei Nature Reserve, you may be lucky enough to see all of these, as well as an array of other species like red hartebeest, black wildebeest, blesbok, hippo and jackal. Picnic areas and restaurants within the reserve make Rietvlei a great locale for a family day out.

Gauteng is known as South Africa's beating heart for an array of reasons. Over and above plenty of things to do, it is home to an abundance of wonderful retirement homes. Get in touch with the CSi Property Group if you need help finding the ideal home for the best years of your life.
